Welcome Letter from LAYHA President

WELCOME To the 2018/19 Season

Hello New and Returning LAYHA Families!

It’s over 90 degrees outside right now and I am really starting to look forward to hockey season – perhaps those two thoughts are connected. Believe it or not, hockey season is right around the corner and the LAYHA board has been busy this summer preparing for the new season.

As many of you know, LAYHA is a co-ed organization dedicated to developing and improving the ice hockey skills of all its players. LAYHA places particular emphasis on sportsmanship, teamwork, and equal ice time (especially at the younger levels). We have adopted a practice philosophy that focuses on fundamental skill development through station-based work, maximum puck touches and near-constant movement. All of this is made possible through the amazing dedication of our volunteer coaches.

As in years past, LAYHA aims to provide all travel teams with an average of 2 practices per week (bonus practices will be available at the beginning of the season) and a schedule of at least 20 games. The younger skill development teams in Learn to Skate and House Mites will enjoy the same level of coaching with a less rigorous practice and/or game schedule.

In order to maintain LAYHA as one of if not the most affordable youth hockey organizations in the state, the board has decided to keep rates for the 2018-19 season the same to all those who take advantage of early registration that will open in the next couple days and be available through Sept. 15. After that, the team level registration fees will increase by a modest 5%. Payment plans will be available.

LAYHA will also continue to maintain the same fundraising levels and options as last year. The organization is dependent upon the generosity of its participants to keep costs for everyone affordable and to maximize the players’ time on the ice. With that in mind, LAYHA asks for an upfront fundraising contribution to serve as a deposit to the organization.

Throughout the season LAYHA will organize and provide numerous optional fundraising activities like wreath sales, coupon promotions, and more that families can participate in to earn back the fundraising deposit as well credit towards some, or even all, of the registration fees. Those who have neither the time nor interest should feel no obligation to participate in the fundraising activities having already made their fundraising contributions at the time of registration. This fundraising arrangement was created at the behest of LAYHA families who wanted more flexibility in the ways they can pay for and support LAYHA. LAYHA also provides a multi-child discount through its fundraising system.

Another great way to keep hockey affordable for all our families is LAYHA’s Annual Skate Swap. This year’s swap will be held the morning of Saturday, Sept. 8, at Fenton Chester Ice Arena. LAYHA families and the general public are encouraged to contribute gently used equipment for sale (either as a donation to LAYHA or on consignment) which the board will sell at bargain prices. Drop off for contributions will be at the rink the night of Friday, Sept. 7. LAYHA board members will also be present during the swap to answer any questions about the upcoming season and to assist with registrations that would still qualify for the early bird rates.

We are excited to get the season underway and can’t way to see all of you on the ice. Make sure to look for LAYHA’s 2017-18 14U State Championship banner proudly displayed in the Fenton Chester Ice Rink.

Go Red Wings!
